Minimum Font Size and Line Width for Foil Stamping Labels
The dimensions of labels applied to products vary according to customer requirements. When the label size is small, the design printed on it inevitably becomes small as well. Even very small 3pt fonts can be beautifully reproduced in printing, meaning that fine object reproducibility is not a major concern in printing.
But what if you are creating small foil stamping labels? Do you know the "minimum font size" and "minimum line width" for Adobe illustrator data?
This time, we created sample limits for the minimum font size and line width for foil stamping labels. We hope this will serve as a reference for designers and data creators.
We Created Limit Samples
The limit samples are palm-sized. We used a common material called art paper 73kg, and applied gold foil. The plate used was a magnesium plate.
The font selected was A-OTF Medium Gothic BBB Pro Medium, with sizes ranging from 4pt to 7pt. Line widths ranged from 0.2pt to 0.5pt. We tested both convex and solid cases.
For reference, a 4pt font size is about 1×1mm. The text size in paperback books is about 8-9pt (3×3mm), so 4pt is quite small for readable text.
The Minimum Font Size for Foil Stamping is 5pt
As you can see, both convex (top) and solid (bottom) cases can barely reproduce 4pt, but it is not clean. Therefore, we recommend using a font size of 5pt or larger.
The Minimum Line Width for Foil Stamping is 0.3-0.4pt
The minimum line width is recommended to be 0.3pt or more for convex (top). The thickness is about 0.1mm. With 0.3pt, there was some waviness. For solid (bottom), we recommend 0.4pt (0.14mm thickness) or more. At 0.3pt, some areas tended to blur.
Additionally, we used Murata Kinpaku's Gold No.3 for this test, but some colors may not be suitable for fine details. If you are considering detailed foil stamping, please consult us in advance.
