About Food Labeling Law
The Food Labeling Law is a Japanese law enacted on April 1, 1993. It has been amended several times, with the latest revision on October 1, 2021, as the "Act on the Labeling Standards of Food Products and Ingredients." The amendments strengthened ingredient and nutritional labeling, enhancing consumer information.
The main purpose is to provide consumers with accurate information for making appropriate choices. Below are the main regulations of the Food Labeling Law:
- Mandatory Labeling: The law requires labeling of ingredients, nutritional content, expiration dates, etc. Scientific evidence is needed for health claims.
- Labeling Standards: The law specifies standards for font size, color, placement, and language or symbols used on labels.
- Prohibited Labeling: Misleading or inaccurate labeling is prohibited. Labels harmful to health are also regulated.
- Supervision and Penalties: The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare oversees the law, and companies with inaccurate labeling may face penalties.
