Nishihira Distillery Limited-Edition Shochu Label "Kana"

A limited-edition label featuring an illustration
Request details
The client commissioned a shochu label for “Kana,” a brown sugar shochu. For this special project, they requested a limited-edition design illustrated by a commissioned artist. Unlike the regular product, the label would be made from a different type of washi paper to achieve a more refined texture and premium finish. In addition, they wished to produce a box as part of the product’s packaging, aiming for a cohesive look that harmonizes with the label design.
Our proposal
We selected white washi paper for the label. Its distinctive grain and slight fuzz create harmony with the shochu label design while adding a tactile quality. This material retains the traditional Japanese aesthetic yet pairs beautifully with modern design, enhancing the product’s overall appeal.
For the box, we chose 450 g/m² coated cardboard. Its substantial thickness emphasizes the product’s premium feel and, like the label, delivers a cohesive visual impression. The smooth surface of the coated board complements the texture of the washi label, further elevating the unboxing experience.

Kana: Brown sugar shochu can only be legally produced in the Amami Islands. “Kana” means “beloved person” in the Amami dialect. With a subtle sweetness from brown sugar and a clean, refreshing taste, it is very easy to drink—perfect even for those new to shochu! We recommend enjoying it with soda.
